SCIENCE OF SOUND!!

Everyday we here a lot of sounds, starting from  sound of your alarm, banging on doors, chirping of birds, wailing of sirens, honking of cars, and yes of course shouting of your teacher. So sound is not a new topic for us. We have been dealing with sound from the very first day of our birth. So it is essential for us to know about the science of sound.

How actually is sound produced and how does these sound travel from one place to the other?

HOW IS SOUND PRODUCED?

So what produces sound?

Production of sound

It is VIBRATIONS.  Only a vibrating body can produce sound. Not convinced?

Okay, imagine a tuning fork before striking and after striking. When do you hear sound? Yes! after striking. place the tuning fork near your ear soon after striking. What can you hear? Vibrations…!!Like this in all sound producing bodies vibrations will be there.

Vibrations produce sound

Imagine different situations where sound is produced. Identify the vibrating part in each case. For example think about a guitar. Which is the vibrating part?

So stretched string will be the vibrating part in a guitar.

Similarly find out the vibrating part in other musical instruments like violin, tabla, drum, keyboard, veena and flute.

Based on the discussion about production of sound try to explain the figure given below.

If sound is produced by vibrations then what is vibrating when humans produce sound?

HOW SOUND IS PRODUCED IN HUMANS

So we have learnt that sound is produced by vibrating bodies. Now the question is how sound travels from one place to the other.

PRODUCTION AND PROPAGATION OF SOUND

Read the document and find out how do sound propagate and also think about why astronauts are using special devices to communicate in space.
